S.L. Pedestrian, Hit by Truck, Dies of Injuries
Victim, 50, Quits Own Car, Steps in Path of Vehicle
Fatal injuries were suffered by Arnold Grant Kartchner, 50, 316 E 13th South, when he was struck by a 1 1/2-ton panel truck in front of his residence Saturday at 4:51 p.m.

Mr. Kartchner had just stepped out of his station wagon when the truck him, according to Dean Wayne Croft, 10, 318 E. 13th South.

The boy told officers he had been seated with Mr. Kartchner in the man's vehicle.

Investigation showed Mr. Kartchner was knocked against the door, along and over the left front fender and over the front of the hood of his own vehicle.

Didn't See Victim

Officers failed to find any indication of the point of impact on the truck, which was driven by Eccles Mangum, 38, 1338 Zenith ave., reports showed.

Mr. Mangum told officers he did not see the victim leave his station wagon, nor at any time prior to the impact.

Taken in police ambulance to St Mark's hospital, Mr. Kartchner succumbed at 8:50 p.m. of a basal skull fracture and crushed chest.

Investigating Officers Dewey Fillis and Harold Peterson said facts of their investigation would be assembled and submitted Monday to. the county attorney for his decision as to citation for Mr. Mangum.

Arnold Grant Kartchner was born 50 years ago in old Mexico, a son of John and Nancy Mann Kartchner. For some time he was a farmer at Blanding, San Juan county. Moving to the Salt Lake area about 25 years ago, he became a crane operator for Utah Copper Co. at Garfield.

Survivors include his mother, 318 E. 13th South; a son; Dean Kartchner; and a daughter, Mrs. Edna Smith,. both of Salt Lake City; four brothers, three sisters, four half - brothers and three half - sisters.

Mr. Kartchner's death was the first traffic mishap fatality in Salt Lake City since May 19.
