On Feb 15, 1864, Cyrus Shaw enlisted for three years in Co. F, 8th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. After training at Camp Dennison near Cincinnati, Ohio, his unit was sent to Charleston, WV, and from there engaged in several raids including one at Lynchburg, VA. On January 11, 1864, Rebels surprised the camp at Beverly, VA, and 575 men were captured and forced to march 162 miles to Staunton, VA. They were loaded into stock cars and taken to Libby Prison near Richmond, VA. Cyrus was in Libby Prison for 35 days until he was exchanged. After a furlough at home, he was sent to Clarksburg, WV, and there was mustered out on July 30, 1865.

He married May 6, 1879, in Clark Co., OH, to Sarah Elizabeth Baker.
