J.R. Ashby April 20, 1928 - June 2, 2012 J.R. went to be with the Lord on June 2, 2012. J.R. was born in Bowleg's, Oklahoma to Olen and Mary Ashby. The family moved to Bakersfield in 1942. J.R. graduated from Union High School (BHS) in 1946. After graduating from high school he proudly joined the Army and served in Korea as a medic. After the war he had a long career with Safeway and KFC with lots of hunting, fishing, and camping during his vacation time. He was predeceased in death by his wife of 40 years Joan Ashby. They had a blended family of six children: Jack (Diane) Tidwell of Texas, Dianna (Eric) Chambers of MI, John Ashby of Bakersfield, Jody (David) Werther of Turlock, California, Lena (Ken) Stonecipher of Bakersfield, and Jason Ashby (deceased). He enjoyed his 7 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. After retiring at 60 J.R. and Joan enjoyed many years of traveling through the USA in their 5th wheel with Fred and Mildred Buss. J.R. could not stay retired for long. He and his friend Fred volunteered many hours at Valley Baptist Church which they were Charter Members of. The two men spent much time, energy, and fun keeping "Valley" running smoothly. He will be missed very much by his family, friends, and church. We love you Dad. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 7th, at Valley Baptist Church, 4800 Fruitvale Ave., Bakersfield, CA 93308 Officiating will be Dr. Roger Spradlin. A viewing will be held Wednesday, June 6th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Mission Family Mortuary, 531 California Ave., Bakersfield, CA 93304. In Lieu of flowers please make donations to The Set Free Ministries Of Valley Baptist Church.
