John Berlinger
A graveside service on Saturday at 11 a. m. at the Orland IOOF Cemetery will honor John "Little John" Berlinger, Jr. Mr. Berlinger, resident of Corning who has attended Orland schools and had a long history in Orland, died Nov. 15 at a Chico convalescent home. He was 85.
Born September 26, 1910 in Orland to John and Lydia Berlinger, he had been a foreman at the La Conda Ranch in Corning for the past 30 years.
He was a member of the Lions Club and the Red Bluff Elks Lodge. The Berlinger family was in San Francisco during the earthquake of 1906, and John's father, John Berlinger, Sr., bought a hammer, saw and level, and after the quake worked as a carpenter there until coming to Orland in 1909. Known as the John Berlinger Construction Company, they built the Orland Arch, the Round Barn and numerous buildings in and around Orland. "Little John" Jr. joined the construction company after his school years. The company later began building grain bins in the area. John Jr. was later in the hardware business with the Berlinger Hardware store until he moved to corning.
He is survived by his daughter Barbara Patton-Sichel of Corning; sister Ann Corbet of Sacramento; brother Walter Berlinger of Orland; two grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of F. D. Sweet and Son of Orland. Visitations will be from 1 to 5 and 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Orland mortuary. – Transcribed by E.
