Jacob Trieber was
the first Jewish
Federal Judge
in the United States.

From 1900-27, Trieber served
as Judge for the U.S. Circuit
Court, Eastern District
of Arkansas.

He was well regarded and
known as "a genius lawyer
and jurist."

Trieber presided over more
than 1,000 cases yearly. He
decided nationally significant
rulings, including:
* Antitrust cases
* Railroad litigation
* Prohibition cases
* Mail Fraud

Some of his decisions, have
had lasting effects on today.
These are like his civil
rights and wildlife
conservation rulings.

Trieber's interpretation of
the 'Constitutional Guarantees
of the Thirteenth Amendment',
(which was overturned by the
post-Reconstruction
U.S. Supreme Court),
was validated, 65 years later,
in a landmark 1968
'Equal Opportunity Case'.

He was born in Prussia
(later the region became
known as a part of Germany)

His family moved to Missouri,
then to Arkansas. He studied and
became an attorney. The genesis
of his legal practice was in
Southern Arkansas.

He had a great affection for his
adopted homeland and especially
for Arkansas. He believed the
greatest shortcoming of the area
was the poor treatment of blacks
and women. Trieber often addressed
the lack of rights for these
individuals.

In 1874, he became a member
of the Republican Party.
He devoted himself to civic
causes and was successful in
achieveing many important jobs.
In 1900, Pres. McKinley appointed
Trieber as the Federal Judge of
the Eastern District of Arkansas.

Trieber's civic legacy includes:
* Efforts to save The Old Statehouse
* The Ark. Tuberculosis Sanatorium
(1909)
* WWI - Ark. State Council of Defense
* American Red Cross/ National Board
* Authored the Banking Law
(1913)
* Grand Master of the Masonic
Grand Lodge
(1902)

Trieber was HUSBAND to:
WIFE - Ida Schradski

They were wed on January 10, 1882
in Illinois

He was FATHER to:
two children
* SON - Harry Trueber
- Who became a LR, Ar. lawyer
* DAUGHTER -
Bess (Trieber) Newton

The Judge made several historic
rulings regarding Civil rights.
He was able to anticipate future
legal on arguments...

Trieber ruled the 1913
'Migratory Bird Act'
as unconstitutional use of
federal authority.
He approved the same regulations
just five years later, when they
were authorized by the
'Migratory Bird Treaty' with our
Northern border-neighbor, Canada.

Trieber injured his hand.
The wound developed severe
infections. He died from
this wound, along with the
complications of
arteriosclerosis.

He died at the home of his
daughter where he had been
staying while serving as a
temp. judge on several
important cases.
