Maria Hugas Acebal Moore, 10 Lighthouse Avenue, passed away Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, following an accidental fall. Mary, as she was best known, was born in Tampa, the daughter of Luis and Amparo Hugas, natives of Madrid, Spain. The family of seven children later moved to St. Augustine, which became her permanent residence.
As a child, Maria delighted audiences with her lovely voice and dancing dressed in Spanish costume, winning many talent contests. Maria was a devoted wife, mother and aunt. She was also a businesswoman, managing the Fountain of Youth gift shop for a decade. She was employed by the Spanish government at the Casa de Hidalgo and took groups on tours to Spain.

With the arrival of the Spanish Catholic priests to the Diocese of St Augustine in the early 1960's, her home became a gathering place as she helped these young men acclimate to the American culture. Her strong faith in her religion always kept her as a symbol of strength for all of those around her.

She is survived by her husband, Capt. Thomas H. Moore USN (RET), her sons, Jack C. Acebal, Ormond Beach, and Eduardo V. Acebal, St Augustine, step-sons Thomas H. Moore Jr, Kauai, Hawaii, Capt. Michael M. Moore, USN, Virginia Beach, Va., her daughter-in-law Bebe Connolly Acebal, step-daughters-in-Iaw Carol Moore and Jennifer Moore, grandchildren Jacqueline Acebal, Jacksonville, Christopher and his wife Kelly Acebal, Ormond Beach, great-grandson, C. Andrew Acebal; a sister, Rita Hugas O'Brien, a sister-in-law, Madeline Gaster Hugas, St. Augustine, and many nieces and nephews. She is joined in heaven by her first husband, Jack; parents; brothers, Luis, Mario, and Jack; sisters, Frances and Nellie; and beloved daughter-in-law, Gail Adey Acebal.

Prayer service will be conducted by Msgr. Diego Conesa at 7 p.m. today in the Cathedral-Basilica of St. Augustine. Bishop John J. Snyder will officiate at the funeral at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Cathedral. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph Development Fund P.O. Box 3506, St Augustine, FL 32085
