Israel Berkshire, 90, father of Mrs. John West of Chehalis, died suddenly at his home in Centralia Sunday morning following a brief illness, presumably from a heart attack. Despite his advanced years, Mr. Berkshire had enjoyed good health over a long period. He was well known to old-time residents of the Newaukeum valley and Chehalis, having settled near Forest in 1888. Thirty years ago Mr. Berkshire moved to Centralia and at the time of his death was making his home with a daughter, Mrs. Claire Covert. Other surviving relatives besides Mrs. West and Mrs. Covert are a daughter, Mrs. J.W. Gibson of Waunch's prairie; a son, Henry Berkshire of McCleary; two brothers, Robert Berksire of Illinois and Ezra Berkshire of California. There are also ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Berkshire was a veteran of the Civil war, having served with the Sixth regiment, Illinois infantry. Funeral services were held at the Sticklin Mortuary at Centralia Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Huntley officiating. Burial was in Washington Lawn cemetery at Centralia.
