When his brother Robert was killed in 1943 , Thomas joined the Marine Corp as an enlisted man. By 1945 he was a corporal stationed in the Pacific standing by for the invasion of Japan. He was discharged in October 1945.

He met and married Elizabeth Griggs. They had two daughters, Barbara and Martha, and a son Robert. They separated and divorced in 1954.

Thomas then wanting change, moved back to Boston and Cape Cod where he remarried. Within weeks he was infected with polio, in two years paralyzed and in two more years he died.
