It is said that Margaret was born about 1786 on the west side of the Rockies. Her father was Sir Isaac Bates an officer in the North West Trading Company in charge of the territory west of the Rockies. There is 2 accounts of the death of Sir Isaac- #1 being that he was killed in an Indian attack in 1811 and another that he was called back to London and before he could return died of typhoid fever. This left Margaret and her mother alone and when her mother realized that he was not coming back she joined a party that was going back to the east side of the mountains- more than likely Rocky Mountain House a Hudson Bay company Post. While at this post Margaret was stolen by the Blackfoot Indians- Margaret's mother is unable to get her back. While at this post she meets James Spence who she marries and he takes her to Edmonton or Fort Pitt where he is in charge. /at tis time Andrew Setter arrives he is about 20 years old and on one of his contracts he sees a while child with the Blackfoot and Margaret's mother is sure that it is her. He arranges with Spence to have relay horses available to him and he steals Margaret back while the women are out berry picking. He returns Margaret to her mother- at this point she is about 12 or 13 years old. Andrew returns to Edmonton a few years later and marries Margaret.
Margaret and Andrew come east to the Red River - at this point they have 4 children and have been married by the Hudson Bay Company. Once they arrive at the Red River Settlement they are married by the first minister in the settlement John West. Here they have 6 more children.
It is noted that Margaret is always referred to as Margaret Spence in the documents of the Red River.
