Lee was born and reared in the community in which he lived and the large crowd present at the funeral spoke of the love and esteem in which he was held by his friends and neighbors.
The following obituary was read during the service: Benjamin Lee Speer, son of G. R. and Elizabeth Jane Speer, was born January 1, 1877, departed this life at Ottumwa, Iowa hospital October 27, 1937. He was married to Ada McVey October 22, 1901. To this union one son was born, Hazen, who with his mother survive him. He united with the Pleasant Grove Baptist church in 1914 and lived a consistent Christian life until his passing away. Besides his wife and son to mourn his passing, two grand sons, Billie and Gene, one brother and five sisters, Frank Speer, Mesdames Dave Gordner, George McVey, George Westhoff, all of Downing, Mrs. Joe Hall of Lancaster, Mrs. Fannie Holt of Milton, Iowa and many other relatives and friends. His father and mother preceded him in death.
Lee was always a loving husband and father and will be greatly missed in his home.
