Darius was born in Jackson County OH the 3rd son of Thomas J. Westlake and Nancy G. Garvin Westlake. He grew up in Pettis Co., MO. After living and working at Maramec Iron Works (St. James, MO) during the Civil War years, he moved his family to Brice (now Bennett Springs) to a large farm where he and his wife raised their family. He was a devoted husband, father, citizen and served faithfully in his church until his death.

Darius and Mary had the following children living to adulthood:
William F Westlake.; Elizabeth I.Guerre Key; Luther J. Westlake; George N. Westlake; Eliza G. Hart; Grace E. Puhst; (Andrew J.); Lucy May Moreland; John B. Westlake; Levi D. Westlake and Letta L. Crutts.
