Science Fiction Author. One of the first successful female speculative fiction writers, Mildred Clingerman was born in Allen, Oklahoma. Following her parents' divorce, Mildred and her one sister were raised by their mother in California, Iowa, Missouri and Texas. The foursome would eventually settle in Tucson, Arizona, where Mildred would graduate high school. She would later attend the University of Arizona. In 1937 she wed Stuart Clingerman, with whom she raised two children. The couple would remain together until her death. Outside of a stint during World War II, wherein she worked at a flight training school, Clingerman was a homemaker following her marriage. During what free time she had she penned fiction, which would eventually find its way into such publications as Collier's Weekly, Good Housekeeping, Woman's Home Companion, and primarily The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. Clingerman's short stories, which are most often compared to those of Shirley Jackson and Zenna Henderson, have been included in numerous anthologies. A collection of her stories, A Cupful of Space, was published by Ballantine Books in 1961. Clingerman died of heart failure in 1997 in McKinney, Texas. She was awarded the Cordwainer Smith Rediscovery Award posthumously in 2014. A second collection of her work, The Clingerman Files: Collected Works, containing previously uncollected and unpublished stories, appeared in 2017.
