Elizabeth Caroline "Carrie" Wilson Clark was born when her mother was only 15. Her mother, Susan Hannah Francis Butler, was married to John Wilson when she was but 14. By the time Caroline was born, or shortly thereafter, John left on a trip to New Orleans to buy leather for his saddle making business, only to disappear. He was likely robbed and killed for the money he carried.

On the 14th of August, 1850 Caroline and her mother were living with Susan's parents, Daniel Norcross Butler and Elizabeth "Betsy" Francis Butler. At this time, Daniel and Betsy had an 8 month old child of their own, and baby Caroline was 9 months old.

A year later in 1851, her mother married for a second time, to James Madison Starkey. The 1860 census lists Carrie as Caroline Starkey, but it seems that she was not legally adopted. They were living then in Lawrenceburg, Miller township, Dearborn co, Indiana.

In 1870 she was in Louisiana, Pike co, Missouri, living with the family of John Rule, who was a miller, She must have been employed by them, but the census does not say. In 1878, on May 1st, Carrie was married to George Turner Clark there in Louisiana.

Carrie and George had seven children including two pairs of twins. One pair, Eddie and Effie were fraternal twins, and the others were identical boys, Ray and Roy. Ray died in 1893 at six years and seven months old, but Roy lived until 1952.
In the 1900 Census, five children are living with Carrie and George, including daughter, Rosie, and her husband, Charles. Eddie had married the previous year and was gone from home.
In the 1910 census, Rosie and Charles are still living with them. Daughter Effie had married in 1903, but on January 30, 1910 Effie had died, perhaps in childbirth.

Carrie died in the next year on May 20, 1911 at McNair Hospital in St Louis, Missouri after a lingering illness which turned out to be stomach cancer. She was buried in the Metcalf Cemetery which is on the Metcalf farm, now the Kenneth Bruning farm, outside Wright City, Warren Co, Missouri where her mother is also buried. Their graves are unmarked, but they are memorialized here.
