Susan was married first at only 14. By the time she was 15, she had a daughter and by 16, she was a widow. Her first husband was John Wilson, a saddle maker, who was several years older. About the time the baby was born, he left with a good sum of money to travel to New Orleans to buy leather for his business. He never returned, and it is surmised that he was robbed and killed. A year later she married James Madison Starkey and had twelve more children. She was living with her daughter Mary Ellen (Starkey)Metcalf at the time of her death. They were living on the Metcalf farm, where she and Mary Ellen, and her first daughter, Elizabeth Caroline "Carrie" (Wilson) Clark are all buried. There may be no markers, but they are there.
And but for that first baby, Elizabeth Caroline, I would not exist..for our family descended from her and her children.
