Charity Poe, 95, formerly of Downing, MO, passed away at the Schuyler County Nursing Home in Queen City, MO, November 9, 2003.
The daughter of William Hezekiah and Nellie Lee (Groseclose) Dellinger, she was born May 10, 1908 in rural Schuyler County, MO.
In December 1924, she was united in marriage to Forest Poe and to this union four children were born, Nellie Lee, Forest Dale, Judith Ann and William Otis.
Survivors include her children, Mrs. Allen (Nellie Lee) Woodruff of Kahoka, MO, Forest Dale Poe and wife, Marge of Downing, MO, Mrs. Gilbert (Judith Ann) Schmitter of Queen City, MO and William Otis Poe and wife, Karen of Downing, MO; 13 grandchildren, Tamara Riney and husband, Edwin of Revere, MO, Terry Lee Woodruff and wife, Karen of Kahoka, MO, Penny Swindler and husband, Steven of Downing, MO, Debra Kay Rayburn and husband, Mike of Bloomfield, IA, Doug Poe and wife, Julie of Downing, MO, Todd Schmitter and wife, Dena of Memphis, MO, Jason Schmitter and wife, Angela of Lancaster, MO, Krista Cooper and husband, Rodney of Greentop, MO, Kala West and husband, Chris of Columbia, MO, Timothy Swanson and wife, Tammy of Columbia, MO, Colton Poe of Downing, MO, Amy Starbuck of Kirksville, MO, and Jessica Waddle of Downing, MO; 19 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren; one niece, Barbara Hickman of St. Joseph, MO.
Charity was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Forest on January 17, 1971; one half-brother, Burl Dellinger; two brothers in infancy; two grandsons, Kent Poe and Allen J. Woodruff; a son-in-law, Allen Woodruff; and a daughter-in-law, Rita Poe.
Charity's mother passed away when she was very young and was raised by her grandparents, Ed and Maggie Groseclose. She attended the Walnut Grove country school district. She was also a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Downing, MO.
Funeral services were held November 11, 2003, at the Norman Funeral Home in Downing, MO with Larry Smith, Pastor of the Downing Christian Church officiating. Music selection was provided by organist Betty Anderson. Pallbearers were Terry Woodruff, Doug Poe, Todd Schmitter, Jason Schmitter, Colton Poe and Dennis Humphrey. A memorial has been established for the donor's choice of the Schuyler County Nutrition Site or the Downing Cemetery. Burial was in the Downing City Cemetery in Downing, MO. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Downing, MO.
