Ernest homesteaded in Fort Morgan, Colorado in 1907 and received a land patent for his claim in 1910 under the signature of President William Howard Taft.
In 1965 he was honored by the Morgan County Realtors Association as being the oldest homesteader still living on his original homestead.

Ernest Poe 87 who homesteaded northwest of Fort Morgan 60 years ago, died in the Fort Morgan Hospital at 4:20 am today.
Poe was born Sept 11, 1882 in Memphis, MO. He homesteaded here in 1910, retired five years ago and moved into Fort Morgan two years ago. He was a member of the Weldon Valley Board of Education for 20 years and was a member of the First Baptist church of Fort Morgan since 1927. He recently had been named deacon emeritus of the church.
Poe is survied by his wife, Lola May of Fort Morgan, three daughters, Rev Margaret Poe of Peru, Ill, Mrs. Frances Faires of Lodi, Calif, and Mrs. Minnie M Gardner of Denver; four sons, Rev Harry L Poe of Hawthorne, Utah, John of Peoria, Ariz. Ernest of Sharon Springs, Kan and Pearl A Poe of Fort Morgan; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
