John Chester Donaldson was the son of Chester Donaldson and Evalina Pier Donaldson and the husband of Mary McCord Smith.
John C. Donaldson graduated from Hamilton College, Clinton, NY, Phi Beta Kappa. He then taught school at Brockport (NY) Academy. From 1853-1856 he was principal of Westfield (NY) Academy. from 1856-1861 he was principal of Gilbertsville Academy. From 1861-1863 he was principal of Ovid Academy. From 1872-76 he was a Professor of Science at Miami Valley College, Springborough, OH.
Later he was a farmer but he was still known as Prof. Donaldson. His son, Chester Donaldson, was a famous diplomat, attorney, and military engineer, who served many years as U. S. Consul to Costa Rica. Another son, Rev. George H. Donaldson, was a noted teacher of theology and biology, known for his writings on eugenics. Later in life John C. Donaldson spent his winters in Florida. He died in Florida, but was buried in Gilbertsville, NY.
John was born "John Chester Danielson." In 1832 along with his father and many other relatives they changed the surname to "Donaldson," believing that 'Donaldson' was the original family surname in 1600's Scotland.
