OBITUARY
Evelina (Pier) Donaldson Root

Cooperstown friends and relatives of W". W. Scott Root were saddened by word that she had passed away at the
home of her son, Arthur P. Root, at
Lockport, Wednesday, June 26th, after
several months of declining health.
Private funeral services were held
from the Prudden Funeral Home,
Lockport, Friday June 28th. Interment
was in the family plot in Brookside
cemetery, Gilbertsville, Sunday, July
14th. About thirty friends and relatives
from Cooperstown attended the committal
at the cemetery which was
given by the Rev. Win. J. Graig of
Gilbertsville.
Evelina Pier Donaldson was born in
the Academy house, Gilbertsville,
August 7, 1860, the daughter of John
and Mary (Smith) Donaldson. Her
chjldhood was spent in' the town
of Butternuts until her parents moved
to Granville, O., where she.was gradu-
ated from the Granville Female Col-
lege. After graduation she taught
school at Granville for several years.
Her parents later moved to Westville,
0., where she also taught school for
two years. On October 14, 1896, .she was united
in marriage with W. Scott Root of
Gilbertsville. They spent the first fifteeri
years of their married life in
Rootville in the Town of Butternuts,
Otsego county, where their four children
were born.
In 1901 Mr. and Mrs. Root moved to
the Donaldson house on Academy Hill,
Gilbertsville, where they lived during
the years of Mr. Root's postmastership.
In 1906 Mr. and Mrs. Root moved
to Cooperstown where they resided
until two years ago.

While still a young girl, Mrs. Root
became a member of the Presbyterian
church of Gilbertsville. Later she
joined by letter, the Presbyterian
church at Cooperstown and then of
Lockport. She was a kind, Christian
woman of very keen intellect andv a
great reader of-good literature. She
was an untiring worker for her church.
Her pastor for thirty years, the Rev.
Dr. Edward C. Petrie in a letter to
Mr. Root said of her, "I think I have
never known in the years of^my ministry
any one more faithful and tireless
in her efforts for the church and the
work. She had the larger view of the
Kingdom and for years, in season and
out, held up the missionary cause of
the women of the church. Something
big was lost when she left us. I am
sure there will be many who will be
thinking of her quick intelligence, her
indomitable energy in everything she
laid her hand, to the genuine quality
of her Christian Faith and life, and to
whom her death will be the sense of
great personal loss."
While in Cooperstown she took a
keen interest in the D. A. R., the
American Legion and the Home Bureau
of which she was a member for
many years and an incessant worker.
Her heart was filled with the milk of
human kindness which she shared so
freely with rich and poor alike. Her
cheery and friendly nature won many
friends who will miss her.
Surviving are her husband of Lockport
and Gilbertsville; three sons,
Charles D., of Denver, Colo.; Donald
S. of Bronxville. and Arthur P. of
Lockport; one daughter, Miss Florence
E. Root, of Kwangju, Korea; a
sister, Miss Mary M. Donaldson of
Lockport; a brother, Chester H. Donaldson
of Los Angeles, Cal., and six
grandchildren.
