As a small child Lou came with her parents from Kentucky to Indian Territory Chicksaw Nation. The parents brought five small children and after arriving in IT five more siblings were born into the family. The mother died when some of the children were very young and Lou helped her father raise the youngest. Her father, Wilson, practiced medicine the old fashioned way traveling by horse and buggy; Lou often rode with her father to care for patients,and is said to help her father mix some of the medicines he used. Lou married Herbert Barton Hayes in May 11, 1902. They made their permanent home in Wichita Falls, where eight Hayes children were born:

Lou made a happy home for the six children who lived to maturity. Lou lived to celebrate her 100th birthday; but died nine months later.
