Irene Evans was born on December 30, 1911 in Sheldon, SC in Beaufort County.

She was the oldest of Ann Bowman-Smith's two children. Her only brother, Ceasar Smith preceded her in death on December 4, 1998. Her journey ended on this earth on February 24, 2009 at the Cardinal Cook Nursing Home in New York City, NY.

Irene attended the public schools of Beaufort County. She accepted Christ at an early age. She was baptized and became a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church in Beaufort.

Irene served her church faithfully until she left for New York in 1938. There she worked different jobs until she found the job she loved most-cooking. Not only did she enjoy cooking, she excelled at it. She was known for her delicious cookies at Christmas time and birthdays. Everyone enjoyed her wonderful meals.

She was a wonderful hostess who loved preparing elaborate dinners and serving them on a beautifully set table. Her high standards made us all feel special.

Irene joined the Mt. Bethel Baptist Church in 1940 and remained a faithful member until it no longer existed. She then became a member of La Gree Baptist Church on March 6, 1977. Irene served on the Senior Usher Board until her health failed.

She was known as "Aunt Irene" not only to family but to others, as well. Irene could be counted on to help and nurse anyone who needed her help. She was available at any hour to give her assistance. She was loved and respected by those fortunate enough to know her.

Although Irene did not have children of her own, she had many "adopted" children that caller her "Mom." These included persons such as Barbara Simmons, better known as "Cookie." Ethel who served on the Usher Board with her and a host of others, like Virginia Ann, who made Irene fruit cakes each Christmas. Among family she was especially close to and spoke of Ann Staten, Virginia Washington, Vicki and Jane. Irene and her cousin Helen Green had a special bond. Helen's mother, Alice Penceal was Irene's beloved aunt. Helen was with Irene when she entered The Northern Manhattan Nursing Home in Harlem, NY. Years later, she entered the Cardinal Cooke Nursing Home, also in New York City, where she subsequently departed this earth.

Irene leaves to cherish hser memory: her sister-in-law, Edith Smith in San Diego, CA; her brother's children, Gus Smith, his wife, Iona in Fresh Meadows, NY, and their children, Heather and Jeff. David Smith and his wife, Doris in Charlotte, NC, and their children, David, Jr. and Renee C. Smith, Jennie L. Hamilton, and her husband, Earl in San Diego, CA and their four grandchildren, Roger, Keith, Marvell, and Earl, Jr., as well as their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Irene also leaves with loving memories of her: THe Evans, Penceal, and Pinckney family members.

Irene has gone home to join those loved ones who preceded her, where they will hug, join hands, and celebrate. Oh, what a marvelous reunion! Therefore, we must not mourn Irene's death but celebrate her full life with happiness, enthusiasm, and love.
