Newark friends were pained to learn of the death last Wednesday of Mrs. Palen at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Knight in Orange, aged 85 years. Mrs. Palen in former years was a frequent visitor in Newark, at the home of her brother, the late Rufus Reed, and she attracted many friends by her kindliness. She was a true gentlewoman, and that covers all that is worth living for. She was very dear to all her family, and her death is deeply mourned by them. Mrs. C. H. Stuart of this village is a grand-daughter, but was unable to be with the family last week on account of illness here. Mrs. Palen was buried on Saturday beside her husband in the old Sleepy Hollow Cemetery at Tarrytown.
