John Dent Wellborn, member of one of Anniston's notable early families, died Sunday at Stringfellow Hospital following an illness.
Private funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock today at Grace Episcopal Church with the Rev. Stratton Lawrence officiating. Burial will be in Edgemont Cemetery. Gray-Brown Service directing.
Born in Anniston in 1899, the son of the late Maximilian and Mary Wellborn, he was educated at Woodbury Forest, Virginia, and the University of Georgia, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
A farmer and businessman, Mr. Wellborn resided at 4820 Bellevue Road. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and the Piedmont Driving Club of Atlanta.
He was one of the original 21 members of the American Volunteer Ambulance Corps attached to the French army in World War II. Upon America's entry into the war, he reported for service with the U.S. Army and served as a captain in intelligence, serving in Spain and Africa.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Margaret Wellborn; two sisters, Mrs. James F. Matthews of Anniston and Mrs. Linton C. Hopkins of Atlanta; and a number of nieces and nephews.
