Gilmen Prestemon -1930

Gilmen J. Prestemon, 39 years of age, manager of the Bagley Co-Operative Company for the past eight years, died at the temporary hospital, Bemidji, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock following a brief illness.
The sad news of his death cast a shadow over the entire community. The primary cause of his passing was influenza which he contracted about seven weeks ago. After three weeks illness he recovered sufficiently to return to work to the elevator, but after working a week he suffered a relapse which carried with it complications in the form of virulent streptococcal infection, focused in the left eye but spreading with great rapidity and deadly effect to every part of the body with fatal results.
Medical science stood by helpless. The best nursing care did not avail the malignant disease in its later developments was soon beyond all human control. On Saturday, a week previous to his death, he was removed to Bemidji and placed under the care of Dr's. Garlock and Garlock, specialists in the treatment of eye diseases. An operation was performed Friday but he failed to rally and passed away on Sunday without regaining consciousness.
The untimely passing of this man, in the prime of life, and on the threshold of a career of usefulness to the community, which, by virtue of intelligence, business ability, and personality he has built up, is recognized as a tragedy by all who have had contact with him and is at all familiar with his business as well as personnel affairs. People had learned to trust him, to rely on his judgment, admire his generosity, and have been captivated by his kindness and good fellowship. No one has ever discovered a trace of bitterness or vindictiveness in him. His dominant personal characteristics have been kindly and considerate. It will be a long time before the community will fully realize that "Presty" is really gone.
Gilmen Prestemon, was born at Waukon, Iowa, September 19, 1890 and was 39 years, 7 months and 7 days of age. he came to Bagley in the fall of 1913 and located on a farm in the town of Popple where he engaged in farming until 1922 when he accepted the position of manager of the Bagley Co-Operative Company, which position he occupied ever since.
His management of this concern has been markedly successful. Throughout a period when retrenchment has been the order of the company has branched out over a widening field of activities and each year ha shown a balance on the right side of the ledger. He willingly and enthusiastically shouldered the multiplying responsibilities, because of his interest and loyalty to the concern which he had built up as well as the community which it served and to which he had become so firmly rooted.
Last year he became united in marriage to Miss Grace Brown of Bagley and settled down to housekeeping and domestic happiness that ended so tragically after only 10 months.
He has always been deeply interested in everything pertaining to the farm and movements and activities that had as its object and betterment of the farmers lot had his wholehearted and instanted support. He was at one time a member of the board of directors of the Bagley Co-Operative Creamery and had been secretary and treasurer of the Farmers Publishing Company for many years. At various times he held minor offices of a governmental nature.
He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of which order he was a Past Noble Grand.
Besides his wife, Grace, he leaves to mourn his loss, six brothers: Carl of Waterville, Iowa, Alvin and Arthur of Waukon, Iowa, Oscar and Melvin of Minneapolis and Emil of Bagley.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at the gymnasium, Rev. O.I. Rossing officiating and Cease Neujahr, local undertakers in charge of arrangements. Burial was made in the village cemetery.
The services were very largely attended and the floral offerings exceedingly large and beautiful.
