Louise Moses John, 94, of West Chester, died on Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, at the Barclay Friends.
She was the widow of James John who died in 2002. They had just celebrated 67 years of marriage before his death.
Born Oct. 8, 1910, in West Chester, she was the daughter of the late George J. and Mabel Rupert Moses.
She was a 1929 graduate of Darlington Seminary of West Chester and was the class Valedictorian. She graduated from the Philadelphia School of Occupational Therapy in 1934.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of West Chester, where she was a former Trustee and a deacon of the church.
Mrs. John's political career expanded over a 30-year period from 1940 to 1970. She was a member of the Democratic Party and served as a precinct committeewoman for West Chester and West Goshen Township.
She was also a member of the democratic state committee, where she was vice-chairman from 1942 to 1955.
In 1956, she became the Director of Women's Activities and served as a delegate at large at the Democratic National Conventions in 1956, 1960, 1964 and 1968.
She was a member of the Pa. Welfare commission from 1957 to 1960 and was an inspector for the Chester County Prison from 1957 to 1959.
She was a Presidential Elector in 1960. She formerly held the position of Treasurer to the Pa. Federation of Democratic Women.
She served as a member of the State Employee Retirement Board from 1961-1964. She was also a former Secretary of the Board of Trustee's for the West Chester State College.
She previously served on the board of directors for the Bring and Buy Shop, which was an organization that donated funds to the Chester County Hospital and the Paoli Memorial Hospital.
She served on the board for the Chester County Senior Housing Committee and the Friends of Caleb Pusey House Inc. of Upland.
In 1955, Gov. George Leader appointed Louise as Chairman of the Movie Censorship Board, and in 1971, Governor Milton Schapp appointed her to the Historical and Museum commission.
In 1940, she and her husband started the Pipin Hot at its present location on the Wilmington Pike.
It is now known as Jimmy John's Pipin Hot Sandwiches. In May of 2005, they celebrated 65 years of business.
In earlier years, Louise and her late husband enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, their summer home in Ocean City, N.J., and their winter home in Pompano Beach, Fla.
She is survived by a nephew, Ashton B.T. Smith Jr., of West Chester and Montana; a niece, Joan C. Smith of West Chester; a great-niece, Patricia Smith Love, wife of Richard, of West Chester; a great-nephew, Ashton B.T. Smith III of West Chester; A sister in law Helen John of West Chester; three great-great-nephews; one great-great-niece; and Roger Steward, the manager of the business for many years, who she considered family.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Josephine John, and a sister Katharine Moses Smith.
Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 3, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 130 W. Miner St., West Chester, PA 19380.
Visitation will be on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at DellaVecchia, Reilly & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 410 N. Church St., West Chester, 610-696-1181.
Interment will be in Oaklands Cemetery, West Chester.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Barclay Friends Employee Holiday Fund, 700 N. Franklin St., West Chester, PA 19380; or to the First Presbyterian Church, at the above address.
