Richard Nettle's chief claims to fame are threefold. First, as a conservationist he was responsible for some of Canada's pioneer conservation laws and their enforcement. Second, as a scientist, he was the first man in North America to breed salmon artificially and the first Canadian to breed any fish artificially. Third, and most important, it was through his efforts and early leadership that the organization which was to become the federal Department of Fisheries came into being. Text by John Laurence Kirwan 1936-2008.
