Angelina County Farmer Victim of Shotgun Disturbance at School House Gathering Results in Death of Bunyan McClure Last Night

W. A. Adams was formerly charged with murder Tuesday afternoon in Justice Cochran's court. Bond fixed at $2,500. Date for an examining trial was set for Saturday morning.

It was announced at the court house that Sheriff W. L. Evans & County Attorney Curtis W. Fenley would make an official investigation of the tragedy between now and the date of the examining trial.

"Neighbor placed under bond as result of difficulty; alleges dead man was wrecking his automobile".

Bunyan McClure, about 40 years old, died at his home in the Ora Community at 10:30 p.m. Monday night as the result of gunshot wounds received in an altercation at the school house two hours earlier.

W. A. Adams, farmer in same community came to Lufkin shortly after the shooting and gave bond in the sum of $1,000 on a charge of assault to murder. The charge was to be changed to murder and a new bond given during Tuesday.

Mr. Adams was accompanied to Lufkin where he surrendered to Deputy Sheriff Wilson by Enoch Jones. Joe McVey, A. Bond and other residents of the Ora Community. The shot which resulted fatally to McClure entered his right side just below the ribs, penetrated his bowels and came out on the left side. A shotgun was the weapon used.

A large crowd of farmers had gathered at the Ora school for the purpose of hearing an address by O. C. LaGrone, county farm agent. The shooting occurred before Mr. LaGrone's arrival, the crowd dispersed and no meeting was held. Witnesses to the tragedy allege McClure came to the meeting apparently under the influence of liquor. They say he created a disturbance and that Mr. Adams and his family was forced to leave his automobile. He returned later, it is declared, and found that McClure had demolished the lights and windshield on his car and still was hammering on it. He then fired upon him with the shotgun.

At the time of the tragedy McClure had 3 cases pending against him in the District Court of Angelina County. They were for sale, possession and transportation of liquor and he was free on bond in each case. McClure is survived by his wife and 2 children, both of whom are married. McClure was a lifetime resident of the Ora Community.

Mr. Adams has lived in the community some 3 to 4 years and also is engaged in farming.

…. An open knife was found in McClure's hands when he was reached after the shooting. County Judge Butler Rolston was the only Lufkin resident attending McClure's funeral. He said the dead man had a gaping wound through his abdomen where the load of the gun had ploughed through.
Those in the vicinity of the school house at the time of the shooting are of the opinion that McClure never regained full consciousness after the fatal shot was fired. (only a portion of this article was legible)
