Patsy Van Doren, 65, Former Cornwall First Selectwoman

May 24, 1995

Patsy Van Doren, a selectwoman in the town of Cornwall for 20 years and an advocate for the elderly, died Sunday at her Cornwall home. She was 65.

From 1969 to 1989, Mrs. Van Doren served on the board of selectmen, and was first selectwoman for four of those years.

She was a current member of the Connecticut Commission on Aging and the Cornwall Commission on Aging, serving on the commission since 1983. She also was a social services and admissions coordinator for Torrington Extend-a-Care from 1989 to 1994.

From 1982 until the time of her death, Mrs. Van Doren was the director of the Action Agency's Retired Seniors Volunteers Program, based in Torrington, and was a founding member of Connecticut Community Care Inc., based in Bristol.

For her work with the aging, she was honored in March with the first legislative advocate award by Connecticut Community Care. In 1992 she received the Connecticut Association of Human Services Award.

She also was a current member of the Community Council of Northwest Connecticut, the Northwest Connecticut EMS Council and the Governor's Council on Voluntary Action. In 1980 she was a delegate to the White House Conference on Aging and was to be a delegate at the 1995 Conference on Aging.

Her husband, Peter Van Doren, died in 1984.

Mrs. Van Doren leaves her brother, Thomas Page Patterson of Parkton, Md.; three daughters, Laura Brazee of Salisbury, Nancy Van Doren of Northport, N.Y., and Anne Kosciusko of Cornwall; a son, Peter Van Doren of West Hartford; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the United Church of Christ, Congregational, in Cornwall.
