He was serving as part of the 3 Rifles Battle Group deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Rfn Marshall was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated while he was on foot patrol near Forward Operating Base Inkerman, northeast of Sangin in Helmand province.

Aged 29, from Exeter, Devon. He worked as a police community support officer and joined 6 Rifles, a Territorial Army (reserves) battalion in October 2007. He deployed to Afghanistan in June 2009 and was posted in Kajaki in northern Helmand for two months prior to moving to the Sangin area. Rfn Marshall was the point man in his patrol, charged with clearing of the ground of IEDs. "Marshy" was described as a mature, intelligent and highly professional soldier with a great sense of humour. He had a love for speed, enjoyed skiing and driving his motorcycle and BMW.

Rfn Marshall is survived by his mother Lynn, his girlfriend Hayley, his brother Alex and sister Jo, along with other family and friends.

Funeral with full military honours was held on March 12, 2010 at Belmont Chapel, Exeter.
