Ervin Thomas Murphy Sr., 85, died May 7, 2003, at Sentara Bayside Hospital following a lengthy illness.
A native of Princess Anne County, Back Bay, Va., he was the son of the late William "Charlie" Murphy and Louise May Murphy. He is survived by two sons, Elmer Ray Murphy of Sarasota, Fla. and Dr. E. Thomas Murphy Jr. of Harrisonburg, Va.; three grandchildren, Loretta Marie Barrackman, E. Thomas Murphy III and John Foster Murphy; four great-grandchildren; and a number of nephews and nieces.
Ervin was a member of Rock Church in Virginia Beach where he served as one of its pastors for more than 20 years following over 30 years of service with the Railway Express Agency. His evangelism ministry of proclaiming God's word was evidenced in his service through jail ministry and shut-in ministry. He was known for his smile and empathic concern for others. He was a veteran of World War II seeing service in France and Germany.
A service of Celebration and Resurrection for Ervin will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel on Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach. The Revs. William F. Mahon, Percy Hughes and Dr. E. Thomas Murphy Jr. will officiate with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a gift may be sent to Rock Church, Virginia Beach or to Industrial and Commercial Ministries, 1 Court Square, Suite 280, Harrisonburg, VA 22802, Attn: Dr. E. Thomas Murphy Jr.
