According to a letter written to his daughter, Ruth Hagman Scullin, his mother, Anna Seifried, died in Switzerland in 1863 before the family came to the USA. A very young sister died there also. Matt Hagman Jr. left the port of Antwerp, Belgium, on the ship Wilberforce along with his father Mathias Hagmann Sr., his brother Gallus, and two sisters Ursula, and Anna. All are listed on the ship's manifest. They arrived on 5 June 1865. They lived in Illinois before moving to Deepwater, Missouri.
