Mrs. Amelia Schaffer, Pioneer Resident, Dies at Age 88
Had Been in Failing Health for Some Time - Lived 72 Years in One Home.
Mrs. Amelia Schaffer, 88 years old, died at noon yesterday at her home, 466 East Fourth Street, where she had lived for the last 72 years. She had been in ailing health for about a year and the last three weeks she spent in bed.
Mrs. Schaffer, who was Amelia Wagener, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wagener, was born in Hamberg, Germany, and came to this country as a child with her parents.
They settled first in Davenport, Iowa, and later came to Winona, where her father became the proprietor of one of the city's very first restaurants. She was married to Charles Schaffer in 1856.
It was Mrs. Schaffer's husband who with his son, Edward, started in 1893, the Winona Dye Works from which the present Schaffer's Cleaning Works is an outgrowth.
Mrs. Schaffer is survived by five sons and three daughters, Henry, Robert, Fred, Miss Mary Schaffer and Mrs. John Bohn, all of Winona, Mrs. John Pfefferle of Minneapolis, George Theodore Schaffer of Oceanside, Calif., and Edward Schaffer, Los Angeles, Calif., eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Private funeral services will be conducted at the residence, 466 East Fourth Street, at 2 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
