She became a duchess consort of Baden ten years later when she married her half-granduncle Leopold in Karlsruhe. Her uncle Grand Duke Karl I of Baden had brought about the nuptials planning to make Leopold even more eligible to be Grand Duke after him with such royal status as she brought to her husband. When he succeeded Karl in 1830 she became Grand Duchess of Baden. Having been known as haughty already as a child, her tenure as the first lady of Baden was known for her intelligence and a keen sense of duty and for her being strict. She was heavily involved in politics and in several controversial issues. When attempts were made to have her meet the current King of Sweden of the new dynasty which had replaced hers, they failed, but she did have a friendly meeting with the future King Oscar II and wife. With her granddaughter Queen Viktoria's three sons by King Gustaf V of Sweden the blood of the old Swedish royal dynasties entered the House of Bernadotte rather closely.
