Her family moved to Trego Co., Kansas when she was young, remaining there nine years. At the end of that time they moved to Clay County, and Maria grew up in the Industry community.
On December 22, 1897, she was married at Clay Center to James F. Downs. Their union was gladdened by the birth of five daughters, one, Nora, dying in infancy. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Adelaide Bates, and two brothers, Frank and Thomas Miller.
She is survived by her husband, James; her daughters, Edna Pesnell, Alma Wolf, Mildred Ward and Irene Lahr, all of Abilene; a sister, Lizzie Hoffman of Longford; four brothers, Harry Miller and Ernest Miller of Wakefield, Albert Miller of Denver and George Miller of Longford; also, ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
