John Crawford is the husband of Climena (Stone) Crawford (b. abt. 1825 d. bet. 1900-1902). According to the 1900 census records, they are the parents of 10 children. Seven were still living in 1900. Their eight known children are:

William Crawford (b. abt. 1847 d. aft. 1860)
Matilda Emma (Crawford) Wheeler (1849-1931)
Ira M Crawford (1852-1895)
Giles J Crawford (1855-1941)
Elias Wallace Crawford (1857-1923)
Edgar Daniel Crawford (1859-1904)
Lewis L Crawford (1862-1945)
John Crawford (b. abt. 1866 d. aft. 1880)

John Crawford was probably born in Madrid, New York, where his family resided, although his obituary says Louisville. He lived in Madrid, Massena and then Louisville in St. Lawrence County, New York until after 1880. In 1847, he married Climena Stone in Massena, and all their known children were born in Massena or Louisville. In 1863, he registered for the draft for the Union side of the Civil War in the New York 17th Congressional District. There are no records of him actually serving in the war. He worked as a laborer before the war and as a farmer by the time of the war. In 1880, he owned one horse and a modest seven-acre farm on which he grew hay.

By December 1893, John and his wife lived in Riverton, Clay County, Minnesota with their son Lewis and his wife Margaret.

By 1900, John and his wife lived in Glyndon, Clay County, Minnesota with their son Edgar and his wife Caroline (known as Carrie), who moved to Minnesota by 1880.

In July 1902, he left Glyndon, Minnesota to visit friends and family in New York before moving west. It appears that his wife, Climena, died beforehand in Minnesota, about 1901, although her burial location is unknown.

About September 1902, John moved to Manning, Washington County, Oregon to live with sons Lewis and Edgar and their families. He died the following year.

Gravesite Details

The headstone for John Crawford has been replaced. The original brass faceplate was pried off and stolen by vandals. The original faceplate read "John Crawford 1819-1903," but all other records indicate that his birth year is 1823. (See obit.)
