DR. GUY AUD, EX-SURGEON, DIES AT 71 - ONCE HEADED CANCER SOCIETY - Dr. Guy Aud, widely known Louisville surgeon who headed the American Cancer Society in 1950, died at 9:35 a.m. yesterday at St. Joseph Infirmary. He was 71. Dr. Aud, who began practicing here in 1915 retired in January, 1958. His offices were in the Brown Building and he lived at 1209 Summit. He formerly was president of the Kentucky State Medical Association and the Jefferson County Medical Society. He also had been K.S.M.A. Journal editor. He had served as professor of clinical surgery at the University of Louisville Medical School and as a member of the surgical staff of General Hospital, St. Joseph Infirmary, and Kosair Crippled Children Hospital. 'Drifted' Into Field. Although he was regarded by his colleagues as one of the best informed persons in the cancer field, Dr. Aud insisted that he was not a cancer specialist. He once told an interviewer he just "drifted" into American Cancer Society work in 1938, adding, "It's just one of those things you get into. The further you go, the more you get interested in it. And the more jobs you take, the more they want to give you." Dr. Aud, as well as serving as president of the national society, had been president and chairman of the executive committee of the cancer society's Kentucky Division. At one time he was regional director for 10 Southeastern states and Puerto Rico. Work Cited In 1950. Without him Kentucky would not have been the first place in the world to have a "cancermobile" unit. He also was credited with responsibility for the installation by the State of the first cancer-clinic service in the nation in a Negro hospital. His work extended such service to all the State's institutional inmates. In 1950 Dr. Aud was awarded a citation by the national society for "distinguished service in cancer control," the first such honor presented to a Kentuckian. A native of Cecilia, and a graduate of St. Xavier High School in 1905, Dr. Aud was graduated from the U. of L. Medical School in 1909. He served in the Army Medical Corps from 1917 to 1919, leaving the service as a major. Rites To Be Monday. During World War II he was a surgical consultant for Selective Service offices here.
