Colonel Young first joined Company D, of the 10th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, as a Private in June of 1898. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in February of 1899, 1st Lieutenant in May of 1900, Captain in July of 1906, Major in May of 1917, Lt. Colonel in the National Army in August of 1917 and Colonel in July of 1918. He retired as a Colonel on May 9, 1921 and was fully relieved from active duty on August 15, 1932. He saw service in the Philippines, Cuba and the Mexican Border. He was also a WWI veteran. He was awarded the Philippine Insurrection Campaign medal, the Cuban Occupation Service medal, the Mexican Campaign Service medal and the World War I Victory medal.

YOUNG BURIAL AT ARLINGTON
Will Hold Services For Retired Colonel Monday in Nation's Capital.

The body of Col. James Scott Young, 64, United States Army, retired, who died yesterday morning at 8:30 o'clock at his home at 2300 Roswell avenue, will be sent Sunday to Washington, D.C., for funeral services and burial in Arlington National cemetery Monday at 11 a.m.
A native of Pittsburg, Pa., Colonel Young entered the army for the Spanish-American war, and later saw foreign service in the Philippines, Hawaii, and Alaska. He was stationed at Detroit, Mich., as an instructor in military science and tactics until the World war, when he was placed in charge of the convalescent center at Petersburg, Va. After the war he again was stationed in Detroit for 15 years as instructor of Reserve Officers Training corps units there. He was chairman of the National Defense commission at Detroit, a member of the Boy Scout executive board there and a member of the Rotary club.
Col. Young was born in Pittsburg November 18, 1877, the son of the late Judge James S. Young and Lida Baldwin Young. He was graduated from Washington and Jefferson. He is survived by his wife, the former Martha Hall of Adell, Ga., a son, James, who is a student at the McCallie school, Chattanooga, Tenn., and a daughter Mrs. D. Reginald Bell of Charlotte.
