Burrell was the son of Patriot Charles McManus and his second wife, Sarah (Hancock) whom he married in 1799 Chesterfield County, SC. He had no children but named siblings in his Will. He also cared for his mother the last few years of her life and helped her apply for her husband's pension.
Burrell helped rear his orphaned nephew Elijah who later moved to TX and had a large family. He also had one slave named John McManus to whom he bequeathed $50.00
