His parents died in an epidemic and William and his sister were sent to an orphanage; 1762 left the orphanage to apprentice in the trade of hand weaving; he served in the Revolution, engaged in the Battles of White Plains and Stillwater as a Lieutenant in command of a company; remained in the militia after the War and attained the rank of Major; 1785 William and his family moved to a 250-acre farm about 4 miles NE of Hillsdale, Columbia, NY; 1800 they moved moved onto a 300-acre farm a few miles NE of Craryville NY.

Inscription

This monument is erected to the Memory of Major William Jordan, who was born at North Castle in the County of Westchester the 2d day of September 1751, and died at his Residence in Hillsdale the 10th day of June 1833, in the 82d year of his Age. He served his country in her struggle for Independence and he maintained to the last an ardent attachment to her free institutions. His intercourse with mankind through life was regulated by the strictest moral Virtne.
His belief in the great truths of reviled Religion was unostentatious and sincere.
He lived his life of a Patriot a Philanthropist and a Christian and died in humble reliance for the Mercies of God through him who is.
