Edna Forbis Kesler

Mrs. Edna Kesler, one of the few remaining pioneers who lived here before Collingsworth County was organized or Wellington was established, died in Collingsworth General Hospital Friday, Dec. 20. She was 96 years of age and had been a resident of Thomas Nursing Center several years.

Her parents, Will Forbis and Effie Richards Forbis, had come to the Fresno Community in 1888. It was then administered by Childress County. Mrs. Forbis returned to Cressan, near Fort Worth, for the birth of her daughter, for there were no doctors in this area. It would be 8 months before the county was organized. Their home was a half-dugout. Mrs. Kesler received her education in the Fresno School, and at Clarendon College. She taught the first school at Pleasant Point in 1909.

She married Clarence Kesler June 6,1910, at Fresno. He died March 15, 1963. When Texas A&M Extension Service established the Home Demonstration Clubs, Mrs. Kesler was one of the first to join. She entered the kitchen improvement contest and won first place. She went far and wide to care for the sick, and if a death occurred, she was often called on to make the burial clothes of the one who had died.
She was an active member of Fresno Methodist Church as long as it remained in the community.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at First United Methodist Church, of which she was a member. Dr. Tom Thomson, pastor officiated, and burial was in Fairview Cemetery under the Direction of Schooler- Gordon Funeral Directors. Pallbearers were Jim Forrester, J B Killian, Carthel Lewis, John Eron Forbis, Alvin Horton and Tommy Lewis.

Surviving Mrs. Kesler are her daughter, Mrs. Lorraine Harwell of Wellington; a sister, Mrs. Ora Lee Stansell of Olton, and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sister, Ethel Forbis Black, and two brothers, John Forbis and Jim Forbis.
