HUGHES SPRINGS - Celebration of life services for Rachel Thomas McCain Benjamin, 70, of Hughes Springs, were at 2 p.m. Monday, March 15, 2010, at First United Methodist Church in Hughes Springs. Mrs. Benjamin's burial service followed in Cornett Cemetery under direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home of Hughes Springs. Mrs. Benjamin died Friday, March 12, 2010, at her residence.

She was born August 2, 1939, in the Cornett community near Hughes Springs. Since 1989, she worked along side her husband, Earl Benjamin, as a business partner in River Port Lumber located in Jefferson, Texas.

In her retirement, she has served her beloved community in many ways. She was a Sunday school teacher at First United Methodist Church of Hughes Springs, co-chairman of the Interested Women of the Church, volunteer and great supporter of local nursing homes, and she had a significant role in initiating the Hughes Springs Library Foundation. When her children were young, she was a scout leader and an MYF leader, positions that she held dear. For many years, she and her husband have been generous contributors of time and money to civic and church projects of Hughes Springs. Rachel's church and community were very important to her, and she has left a great legacy for both.

She was an "adopted" mother and grandmother of many who held very special places in her heart. The support and guidance that she provided to everyone she encountered will be long felt.
