He was born in Crieh Parish, Sutherlandshire, Scotland. In coft named Kinlochlaggan. I have linked his parents to him.

He married Janet "Jessie" McDonald on 23 Dec 1850. She was from Balchraggan, which is about 5 miles from his home in Kinlochlaggan. The made their home in Balchraggan and to this union 10 Children were born.

Finlay was a blacksmith, violin maker, and ironcraftsman par excellence; he even made a gun at one time.

He was the only son of seven that remained in Scotland. His brothers all went to North America (Canada and U.S.), never seeing one another again, tho they did write. Missed them dearly. There are copies of letters later to a nephew that were handed down.

A few years after his parents deaths he made them an cast iron gravemarker in 1863, that in 1978 showed little wear to it, where as his family stone was hard to read, because of weather wear.

This is what was written in his bible listing births of his children.

"This Holy Bible belongs to me Finlay Gunn Blackmith Balchraggan near Portinlick the Husband of Janat Mc Donald: to us Born first a son named Hugh after his Father's Father, second born a daughter named Margaret after his mothers, third born a son named George after his Fathers out west brother, fourth born a son named William after his mothers father 5th Born a son named Alexander after his Father second brother 6th a daughter named Christy after her Fathers first sister and his Mothers first sister, 7th a son named John after his Fathers third brother, 8th a daughter named for her Mothers name Janet, 9th a son Born named Joseph, after his Fathers Fourth Brother, 10th a daughter named after the 4th of her mothers sisters"
(last childs name is Effie, brother George was his oldest brother).

There are also church records showing their dates of birth and dates of when they were Baptized, but no copy was made for Family History Book. What is in Family Bible of these things are listed with their mother.

His Granddaughter Christina Graham MacKay, said he was a very religious man and was reciting the 23rd Psalm as he died.
