Lula Verlea Smith
(December 31, 1926 - March 12, 2010)

Lula Verlea (Laffey) Smith, 83, of Jamesport, MO passed away Friday, March 12, 2010 at the North Kansas City Hospital.

Lula Verlea Laffey was born on December 31, 1926, in rural Caldwell, MO, the daughter of Grover and Ella (James) Laffey.

Lula graduated from Jamesport High School in 1945. She attended school at Maryville Teachers College gaining enough education to teach school. She taught at Happy Hollow Country School before marrying her high school sweetheart George Buel Smith on July 6, 1947. They were married 62 years and to this union four children were born; Buel Ray, Martha, Janice, and Brenda.

Lula was always active in community clubs and events. She was a leader of the Brushy Squirrels 4-H Club for over 20 years and taught sewing, cooking, gardening, and home grounds to many area young people for 25 years. Many young people still remember the fun classes held in Lula's home and still use her hot roll and biscuit recipe. Lula and her students always planted flowers at the Jamesport City Park to have it look beautified for the many summer events.

Lula was an active member of the Clover Leaf and Fortnightly Clubs and always enjoyed being the hostess and serving her goodies she had made. Lula also belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star for many, many years.

Lula was a member of the Jamesport United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school classes. She thoroughly enjoyed having church meetings at her home so she could serve her homemade goodies to her guests.

One of Lula's greatest passions was spending time in her garden and flowers. She spent hundreds of hours each year planting and caring for her garden and flowerbeds. Another passion of Lula's was making homemade jellies, pickles, pies, cinnamon rolls, and ice cream. For many years she was requested to make her special burnt sugar ice cream for 4-H suppers and the Jamesport Livestock Fair. Most of all Lula loved to cook for her four grandkids and five great grandkids and always tried to have their favorites ready when they arrived at the farm. Their favorites included Grandma's hot homemade rolls and gooseberry jelly and noodles.

Lula loved and was very close to her brothers and sisters, and always enjoyed spending time with them. One of the highlights each summer was the Laffey Reunion where Lula always took pride in selling her dill pickles and strawberry gooseberry jelly at the family auction.

Lula was preceded in death by her parents; Grover and Ella Laffey, infant son; Buel Ray Smith at the age of 5 months, two brothers; Fred and Mack Laffey, two sisters; Ruth Thompson and Dorothy Critten.

She is survived by her husband George of Morningside Center in Chillicothe, MO, three daughters; Martha and husband Earl Lockridge of Lincoln, NE, Janice and husband John Rose of Bethany, MO, and Brenda Lu Smith of Norborne, MO, two sisters; Mary and husband Clayton Campbell of Chillicothe, MO, Delores and husband Dale Lockridge of Corydon, IA, a brother; Pat Laffey and wife Darla of Chillicothe, MO, a brother-in-law J.
