Mrs. Catherine Arnold, a widow lady, aged 40 years, while returning from her work in the Blackstone Manufacturing company's mill last evening, to her home, was struck by the White Mountain train on the Providence and Worcester railroad, just opposite the mill gates, and was almost instantly killed. The train was going at a forty mile-an-hour speed, and struck the unfortunate woman with such force as to send her body a distance of three hundred feet. When picked up life was exilect. Her right thigh, right arm, and left leg, below the knee, were broken and she received also a deep wound on the temple.
The deceased's husband was a Prussian, with whom she journeyed to his native land shortly after marriage, and where he died about nine years since. After his death she returned to America and has resided ever since in Blackstone. Three sons, the oldest 15 years and the youngest 9, her mother, Mrs. Cleary, and a sister, Mrs. David Gilbert survive to mourn her sad end.
Medical examiner Dr. R. R. Clark of Whitinsville, was at the scene of the accident this morning, and, after making a preliminary examination ordered an inquest in accordance with Massachusetts law, which specifies that one must be held no matter under what circumstance a fatal accident takes place on a railroad. The crossing where the accident occurred is a very dangerous one, there being no warning whatsoever given of approaching trains and in this instance the train could not be seen, dashing along at its terrible speed, in time to escape.
The property on both sides of the track belongs to the Blackstone company, who should by all means secure some type of protection for the hundreds of their operators who are passing and repassing over such a dangerous place daily. The wonder is that more accidents do not occur.
