Mrs. Alice Dunne, 87, mother of a family long prominent in business and civic affairs here, died at her home, 1335 N Hunter, shortly before midnight. She suffered a paralytic stroke 10 months ago and never fully recovered.
A native of Ireland, Mrs. Dunne went with her parents, Francis and Margaret Gibney, to Australia when an infant. The family arrived in San Francisco in 1867 and in that city she married Edward Dunne in 1882.
In 1883 Dunne came to Stockton and opened a branch store of the Nolan Company, a San Francisco shoe retailing concern. Later he bought the store and changed the name to Dunne's Shoe Store. He died in November, 1919.
Widely known for her unobtrusive charities, Mrs. Dunne had a legion of friends in all walks of life.
Surviving are five sons and five daughters - Frank E. Dunne, William Dunne, Judge Raymond Dunne, Vincent Dunne, Mary Dunne, Helen Dunne, Mrs. Alden White and Mrs. Delmar Jacobs, all of Stockton; Edward Dunne Jr., Santa Cruz, and Mrs. Joseph H. White, Pittsburgh, Pa. She also was the mother of the late Joseph and Leo Dunne.
Mrs. Dunne's body will be in the St. Joseph's Hospital Chapel tonight and a rosary will be recited there at 8:30 o'clock. A requiem mass will be celebrated in the hospital chapel at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning. Interment will be private.
Members of the family have requested that flowers be omitted.
