The brothers Matija (age 17) and Franc (age 15) Birtič were murdered on 15 August 1947. They set out from their farm early that morning to participate in the traditional bell-chiming at the church for the parish holiday, the Feast of the Assumption. On their way to the church they were challenged and shot by a Yugoslav military squad lying in wait. Franc was killed immediately by a shot to the forehead, and Matija was shot in the stomach and then bayoneted as he dragged himself along the ground. The soldiers hid the bodies in the nearby bushes, where they were later discovered by the locals. (Summarized from Zaveza no. 4, Ljubljana 2009)
