OBITUARY :
4TH MAN DIES OF BURNS IN HOTEL FIRE

A flash fire which ripped through the Reeder Hotel in Chambersburg Thursday night claimed another victim early yesterday, WILSON BEARD, a bystander, was the fourth to die as the result of the blaze. Beard suffered severe burns and cuts when a big plate glass window exploded from the intense heat of the fire as he stood neajby.

Three others, who were permanent residents of the hotel, were killed. They were Robert Stine and Mark Staley, both unemployed, and Clarence Snively, caretaker at Penn Hall. All were elderly.

Investigators from the Fire Marshal's Office in Harrisburg went over the blackened building yesterday but came up with no solution as to the origin of the fire.

Franklin County Sheriff Charles Dessem, one of the first of the firefighters to get inside the blazing hotel building, was injured slightly. He said he ran through the bar room of the hotel's tavern, which was filled with smoke, looking for people who might be trapped. However, a flash of flames forced him to retreat and don an oxygen mask before returning to the building. Shortly after the body of Mr. Stine was found.

Sheriff Dessem said he was puzzled as to how the fire go started. However, when asked if he thought it might be a case of arson, he said, "I would rather not comment on that."

The Pennsylvania Sheriff said the area in which the blaze got started was also used as a pick-up spot for refuse collections. He said there were usually several boxes of papers and other highly inflamable material in this hallway.

Mr. Beard, who lived at 220 Water St., Chambersburg, died yesterday morning at 4:30 a.m. in Chambersburg Hospital.

Born in Greencastle, he was the son of Harvey C. and the late Bessie (Stine) Beard. Mr. Beard was 48 years old.

He was employed for 15 years at T. B. Woods Sons Co., in Chambersburg. Mr. Beard was a veteran of World War II, and a member of the VFW and the
American Legion.

Besides his father, he is survived by a step-mother, of 504 Pennsylvania Ave., this city; brothers, Earl W. and Lloyd K. Beard, both of Chambersburg; and a sister, Miss Evelyn I. Beard, also of Chambersburg.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p. m. from the Barbour Funeral Home, Chambersburg, with the Rev. Dr. Clyde 0. Meadows officiating. Interment in Beautiful View Cemetery, Middleburg.
