Former River Captain Dies --- David E. Chard, 81, is victim of fall suffered 2 weeks ago.
A fall he suffered two weeks ago brought about the death this morning of David E. Chard, 81, retired steamboat captain, at his home, 3 Ninth Street, Watervliet. Mr. Chard was born is the old village of West Troy and had always resided there.
He was one of the best known river captains when navigation on the Hudson was at its height. He later conducted a boat livery in lower Broadway. Leaving the river with the passing of the steamboats. Mr. Chard entered the employment of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad. He was flagman for the Tibbetts Avenue crossing, Green Island, for the past 14 years.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon from the residence. The Rev. E. Hilton Post of the Third Avenue Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Alban Rural Cemetery.
