Silena Moore Holman was born near Decherd, Tenn. She began teaching school at age 14 and taught for 10 years until she married Dr. T.P. Holman. She began work for the Tennessee Woman's Christian Temperance Union in 1877 and in 1899 was elected president of this organization. A brilliant and lucid writer, Mrs. Holman often contributed to the Gospel Advocate from the 1880s until her death. Much of her writing was confined to temperance issues, arguments against tobacco, and the like. In 1888, however, Mrs. Holman crossed swords with David Lipscomb on the ministry of women in the churches. Lipscomb printed all that Mrs. Holman wrote for the Gospel Advocate, and she was considered "a mother in Israel." Her good friend T.B. Larimore spoke at her funeral service. Gospel Advocate, June 2005.
