Joseph was the son of Benjamin & Martha Lively of Albemarle Co., VA. He migrated to Greenbrier Co., VA circa 1794, after Cottrell Lively moved there circa 1790. They appear to have been related since they lived close to each other, but Benjamin's will didn't mention Cottrell. Some family trees state that Joseph had a son Benjamin (1797-1840), but his will didn't mention Benjamin's children or state that he had already given them their legacy, and Benjamin's name has the JR suffix on his 1822 marriage bond... maybe a son of the Benjamin taxed in Greenbrier 1796-1798 & Monroe 1799-1801?
Joseph married Frances Maddy in 1795-1800, per ages of the 8 children living with them in the 1810 census (Monroe Co., VA/WV) -- there's no known record of their marriage in any VA or WV county. After her death, he married Mildred Amelia "Milly" Dick in 1832 in Monroe Co. -- she was born there circa 1799 (per age at death), and died there on 27 July 1873. They were blessed with one child: Rudiman Green Lively, b. 30 Aug 1834 Monroe Co., d. 19 Aug 1917 same place (was a Capt. in the Civil War).
