Kenneth Melvin Allen
Kenneth " Kenny" Allen was born on August 24, 1946 in San Antonio, Texas, and died on July 23, 1993 in Corpus Christi, Texas.
He was the son of Melvin Earl Allen and Rita Gilmore. In 1955, his family moved from San Antonio to Laredo, when The R. M. Allen & Sons Transfer and Storage Company opened a branch in Laredo. The companies were the exclusive agents for United Van Lines. His Grandfather, Robert Allen, founded the Allen Transfer Company in San Antonio in 1933. Kenneth enjoyed living in Laredo and had many friends. He was very talented in the Arts. Kenneth attended St. Joseph's Academy in Laredo, St. Edwards High School in Austin, Texas, & St. Edward's University in Austin. As a teen, he was an excellent Precision Tap Dancer of the Lacy Studio in Laredo. He was also a gifted pianist with a beautiful voice. As a teen, he often entertained as a singer/dancer for various charity organizations and fundraisers both in Laredo and San Antonio, as well as military service clubs at Laredo Air Force Base and Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He took part in several plays and musicals in the area. One of his favorite memories was deep-sea fishing with his father off the Coast of Mazatlan, where they both caught huge blue sailfish.
Kenneth served in the United States Air Force and was a Disabled American Veteran. He loved to travel and spent time in Alaska, Hawaii, California, Florida & the Florida Keys. Those who knew Kenneth missed his quick wit, good conversation, and the pleasure of enjoying his singing and dancing.
Mr. Allen was proceeded in death by his father, Melvin E. "Buddy" Allen, a prominent South Texas Business leader, his mother Rita Allen Fitzgibbon, sister Marlena Allen (Edward) Evans, and nieces Elena and Elizabeth Evans of Laredo, and many friends. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans Organization.
Memorial services were held at 10 a.m., August 3, 1993, at Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapel, Loring and Cortez with Msgr. Lucian Bragley, of Blessed Sacrament Church, officiating, preceded by a Veteran's Memorial Service given by Mr. Hector Pulido, Chaplain of the American Legion State Posts. Interment followed in the City Cemetery in Laredo with full Military honors. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Earl Gilmore, John Fitzgibbon, Sr., Edward Evans, Jack Davis, John Fitzgibbon, Jr., Harvey Elling, Carlos Gallagher, Joe Perron, Tomas Aguilar, Hilario Rojas, and Domingo Garza. Arrangements under the direction of the Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapels.
